One look at
Randy and it is obvious he is from Sweden - from his eyes and
hair to his flashy stick handling. Randy honed his
skills with a long apprenticeship playing in the Swedish Elite League.
Based on the encouragement of Chief Scout, Paul Smith, Randy made
the big move to the Red Army in 1995, where his goal scoring quickly
made him
a
fan
favorite.
Randy's
style
benefits
tremendously
in the free-wheeling open style of the Red Army, away from the clutch
and grab and trapping style of the National Hockey League.
What has impressed many
people is Randy’s ability to play
a complete game without coming back into his own end or going into
a corner. As the Steffer once said: “Randy has perfectly combined
the most notable features of Linton’s and Chuck’s games.
He is the Inge Hammerstrom of the Red Army”. As you remember,
Harold Ballard once said that “Inge Hammerstrom could skate
into a corner with a half-dozen eggs in his pocket and not break
any of them”. Fellow team-mate John Cowan is quick to defend
him, stating that “no one has accused Randy of skating into
a corner”.
Always the first to arrive and the last to leave, Randy is a natural
born leader, especially in the dressing room. In 1999, Randy became
head of Sports Psychology at Artie's Hockey School.
